| Traveling to Nantucket
Unless it is absolutely necessary, please do not bring your car to Nantucket. The island is only 14.5 x 3.5 miles in size with most lodging, shops, and restaurants within a mile from the center of town. Our streets are narrow and diving and parking are difficult, particularly in the summer. There is ample parking in Hyannis around the boat docks and at the airport. Bicycle, car and moped rentals, as well as taxis and buses, are available on the island. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority shuttle system began in 1995, and will continue for the 2001 season. Call the NRTA at 228-7025 for additional information. There are taxi stands at all points of entry to the island, and at the Pacific Club Building on Lower Main Street. Taxi rates ate based on mileage and are higher after 1 am, with extra charges for additional passengers and baggage. Both boat lines transport bicycles at an additional charge.
